Perfect players to target in Dennis Schroder sign and trade

The Detroit Pistons have a number of ways to benefit from what will eventually be a sign-and-trade of Dennis Schroder.

The biggest rumor has Malik Monk coming to Detroit but that seems like it may be wishful thinking from Sacramento according to recent reports.

The Pistons can take back around $23 million in salary if they can find a player to take back in the deal, but that would require a third team if Detroit can’t work anything out with Sacramento.

If they do not land a player, the Pistons will get a hefty $14.3 million player exception that they could use at any point next season, so they are not under pressure to use it now and may decide to keep some powder dry for a bigger move at the deadline, which is something I am sure many Pistons fans don’t want to hear, as they are eager to get this deal done and get another player in Detroit.

There are some interesting names out that that may be available if Detroit does make a deal now, as they could certainly use more size, depth and shooting at the four spot.

Harrison Barnes

Barnes is a solid pro in the vein of Tobias Harris, as he’s not a star but he’s a good complementary player that doesn’t take anything off the table and should be able to help the Pistons’ young core.

Barnes is a good 3-point shooter, who can play both forward spots, and his deal only goes through next season.

He’s a fit, but the question is whether San Antonio has any intention of trading him and what they would want in the deal, as they too lack shooting and may not want to give up one of their better 3-point shooters.

I’d rank this as a long shot with a better chance of happening at the trade deadline when the Spurs may want to move him before his pending unrestricted free agency.

PJ Washington

I was hoping the Pistons would do this sign-and-trade with Dallas, as they also have a need at point guard and Washington’s salary is a perfect match.

The Pistons could still try to fold Washington into the deal, though Dallas would have far less motivation to move him with Schroder now off the table.

Washington would be perfect as a guy who could back up or play with both Pistons’ big men, and his contract only extends through next season.

He’s another player who may be made available at the deadline depending on what happens with Dallas next season, but as of right now, they fancy themselves contenders and Washington will help at a four who can step out and shoot.

Fans are ready for this deal to be completed and probably won’t be excited about a player exception, but they may have to settle for it if the Pistons can’t find a player they like who is available. It may not be as exciting, but having $14 million at the trade deadline could put the Pistons in the driver’s seat to make a big trade.
