Pistons' Ayo Dosunmu dream could tragically be dead before it even starts

High on the Pistons' free agent target list this summer was Minnesota's Ayo Dosunmu, but the Wolves are reportedly already engaged with him on a deal to bring him back. Dosunmu established himself as a premier free agent guard after some breakout playoff performances and it's no surprise to hear that the Wolves are trying to lock him down proactively. But the news is tough to hear for the Pistons, who may now be forced to return lesser guards on the roster or pursue alternate options.

The Pistons could lose out on a dream free agent

Dosunmu had been wasting away for a couple years on the Bulls, but found himself traded to a playoff team at the deadline last season. He made the most of his postseason opportunity and scored 43 points in an upset victory without superstar teammate Anthony Edwards. On top of his ability to create his own shot, Dosunmu also brings solid defense and knockdown three-point shooting.

Adding him into the Pistons starting lineup would give them a lot of versatility and let others play whatever position suits them best. Although he's a natural shooting guard himself, Dosunmu is sturdy enough on defense to avoid being a weak link even in an elite Pistons defensive unit. He also shot 44% from three last season, which would help amend a lot of Detroit's offensive woes.

Most importantly, Dosunmu isn't just limited to spot-up shooting for his points. His playoff reel also includes multiple plays beating defenders off the dribble or even hitting pull-up threes, in addition to his usual excellence hitting open looks off kickout passes. He would be an ideal backcourt partner for Cade Cunningham, since he's very capable of knocking down an open shot but also able to take over ball-handling duties when needed.

It'll be hard to find another Dosunmu this summer

One of the most painful aspects of missing out on Dosunmu as a free agent is the current market for other quality guards. There are arguably no other free agents offering the same level of two-way play at the shooting guard position. If the Pistons are instead forced to expand their search into the trade market, they will find stiff competition and be forced to give up a sizable package.

Additionally, many ideal backcourt mates for Cunningham are on larger contracts and older players. Signing Dosunmu now could secure a long-term piece (Dosunmu is only 26) on a valuable contract. He fits the Pistons' existing strengths well while also filling in the gaps of their roster weaknesses.

For the time being, all the Pistons can do is hope that Dosunmu doesn't re-sign with the Wolves before Detroit has a shot to snag him.
