The Pistons can't repeat Jalen Duren mistake with Ausar Thompson

Detroit needs to lock up Thompson before he even hits free agency.

The Pistons have obviously put themselves into a bind with Jalen Duren's restricted free agency this summer and they cannot afford to do the same with Ausar Thompson next year. Thompson is eligible for an extension until the start of next season, but we've heard very little about any progress on that front. If the Pistons can get that deal done, it'll save them a lot of headache next year and lock up Thompson for good before he even hits restricted free agency.

The Pistons shouldn't even let Thompson get to free agency

Even last year, I was a big fan of doing what it took to secure Duren on an extension even if it meant potentially overpaying for his services in the short term. We've already seen the negative effects of his restricted free agency this summer, not only in the possibility of him leaving but also in limited trade flexibility for Detroit as they navigate his contract negotiations.

It's been hard for the Pistons to target major free agents and trade targets effectively because they have so much uncertainty about where Duren will end up on the salary sheet. Despite their best efforts, this has led to another offseason without addressing the biggest problems on the roster to help Cade Cunningham. And if the Pistons don't lock up Thompson quickly, they will face a similar situation next year too.

It's also important for the Pistons to lock up Thompson now because that might get them a discount on him in the long run. To my eye, Thompson was clearly the Pistons' second-best player in the playoffs due to his insane defensive impact. Despite being a non-factor on offense for most of the postseason, Thompson made his presence felt by completely shutting down opposing offenses, either by taking away their primary options or wrecking havoc as a help defender.

Thompson could have suitors in restricted free agency

If he gets to next season without a contract extension, Thompson will become a restricted free agent in the summer of 2027. And he could generate more interest from other teams than Duren because of his defensive versatility. On a team with ample shooting and a stretch 5, Thompson's offensive limitations can be hidden while his defense can shine properly.

He's also a threat to improve his offensive output drastically next season, leading to more interest from the market at large and more demand for a bigger contract if he's not extended before then. The Pistons can't have another summer full of haggling over a young player's contract extension next year, especially as Cade Cunningham enters his prime and the team should be set up to compete for titles.

Detroit needs to do what it takes now to secure Thompson on a long-term deal. Even if that contract comes with some initial sticker shock, it'll be worth the peace of mind in 2027.
