Pistons could get their biggest addition without making a single move

Is Wendell Moore Jr the missing piece?

The Pistons are likely exploring multiple trade options to add shooting, but the perfect solution could already be under contract in Wendell Moore Jr. Moore, who is signed to a two-way contract between the Pistons and Motor City Cruise (G-League affiliate) recently showed his full shooting and scoring prowess. In a recent Cruise win, he had 40 points in just 25 minutes while hitting 5 threes and barely missing at all.

Wendell Moore Jr could be ready for the NBA

Moore’s unexpected breakthrough was impressive in more ways than one. His willingness to take and make threes stood out, especially when the Pistons make fifth-fewest threes per game this season. But equally important was his flashes with another key skill: attacking closeouts to get efficient shots at the rim.

Versatile scoring can unlock a team’s offense more than one-dimensional shooting ever could. And Moore has shown off his full repertoire this season with the Cruise. He’s averaging over 17 points per game (in just 25 minutes) while shooting 53% from the field and 50% from three.

Moore has also been known throughout his basketball career as a solid defender. He’s capable of disrupting opponents to force turnovers and uses his length (7’0” wingspan at 6’5” height) well. Adding a two-way force like that to an already deep roster could be the final push the Pistons need before the playoffs.

Moore’s basketball journey also reflects the character of this Pistons team. He went from playing at Duke in college to bouncing around various NBA and G-League teams. But Moore has continued to hone his craft and develop a strong resilience.

The Pistons have already seen one outstanding success from their two-way players this season in Daniss Jenkins. Getting more meaningful minutes from Moore would be a shocking success and give them a huge advantage in the later parts of the season. While other teams are struggling with fatigue and injuries, the Pistons have the luxury to dig deep into their rotation without losing too much production.

Moore’s emergence could also give the Pistons a 3-and-D wing without giving up assets or impacting team chemistry. These have understandably been concerns for a team sitting atop the East with a comfortable cushion. Regardless of which trade target the Pistons might pursue, there’s the risk that sending out an underrated piece or adding a new face could ruin the vibes.

But Moore should fit seamlessly into the team since he’s already been around the Pistons all season long as a two-way. His G-League performances aren’t necessarily indicative of his ability to play for the Pistons, but they do offer a hopeful glimpse for the future. And if Moore can give the Pistons a cheap boost now, the rest of the NBA should be on high alert.
