The Pistons were eager for a playoff rematch aginst the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals but instead got bounced by the Cavaliers in 7. However, the Pistons may have still impacted the conference finals by dragging their second-round series to 7 games and giving the Knicks a huge rest advantage.
New York is now in an ideal position to take advantage of the Cavaliers' potential fatigue and the tactical adjustments Cleveland already made when playing Detroit. The Knicks barely had to exert any effort or deep strategy in Round 2 as they swept the 76ers, so they've got the upper hand when it comes to scouting.
The Knicks couldn't have asked for a better outcome
Instead of playing a Pistons team that swept them 3-0 in the regular season, the Knicks get a better matchup against the Cavaliers. New York has previous playoff success against a similar version of the Cavaliers from three years ago, when they won a first-round series in 5 games. Of course, the Cavaliers have grown since then but the Knicks still hold a lot of confidence from that recent outcome.
The Knicks also won their regular season series against the Cavaliers this year by a 2-1 margin. Their two wins came before the new year, and Cleveland did finish the matchup strong with a 15-point victory in February. However, the Knicks have looked like a completely different team since then and found a new gear in the playoffs.
The Pistons weren't ready for a conference finals yet
Unlike the Pistons, the Knicks should have no problem generating efficient offense. Even if the Cavaliers find a way to shut down their star guard Jalen Brunson, they still have capable scorers and creators at different positions. In fact, New York's balanced offensive approach has been a hallmark of their playoff dominance in their last 6 games.
Compared to the Pistons, the Knicks have looked like a much more complete team. Their defense may not be as dominant as the Pistons, but they are credible on both ends of the court. This two-way brilliance has paid off already and New York fans are hoping it can carry their team to its first Finals in 27 years.
Watching the Knicks thrive may be a valuable lesson for the Pistons. Obviously, the Pistons got a close-up look last year in their first-round series but the Knicks seem to be truly maximizing their talent and roster construction now. A few years ago, the Knicks were built in a similar fashion to the Pistons: a strong defense and physical players around a ball-dominant guard. But they made some key moves to become a true title contender, just as Detroit must do this summer.
