Duncan Robinson has been fantastic for the Detroit Pistons this season. His 3-point shooting is as good as advertised (38.4% on over 7 attempts per game) and he's provided some vital floor spacing for the first-place Pistons.
At the same time, he's also dangerously close to being overtaxed in his responsibilities. After Tobias Harris' injury and now with Jalen Duren out too, Robinson becomes the de facto No. 2 option for the Pistons. That's not really a fair ask of him — and it's why the team should probably scour the trade market for some more offensive creation help.
Robinson is going to shoot and shoot well; but he's not an offensive creator in the way that the Pistons will need him to be. Now it's time to go get someone who can be that guy if called upon, and let Robinson remain the lethal shooter he's always been, while not forcing him into a role he's not capable of playing.
Pistons' depth will come into question in the postseason
Of course, any team would struggle after suffering two key injuries. But the Pistons aren't trying to be "any team" this year. Doubling down on depth before the deadline is the best way to ensure that, even if they deal with injuries in the postseason, they have a chance to make the deep run that fans have waited so long for.
CJ McCollum was a perfect candidate to be that guy, but he was just traded for a 4-time All-Star, so I won't fault the Pistons for missing out there.
It doens't have to be an overly flashy trade, either; there's no reason to give up any crucial pieces of this Pistons team with how well they're operating as a unit. Michael Porter Jr. would be awesome, but the Pistons won't be alone in any pursuit of him. Could DeAndre Hunter be worth buying low on? After all, it's not like he'd be asked to create regularly when the Pistons are fully healthy — but he'd be a solid insurance policy if nothing else.
Every Pistons player has played their role this year. That's why they're four games ahead of everyone else in the Eastern Conference. But injuries to Harris and Duren have left this team a little shallow at important positions. That might not matter in the playoffs... But in a season with as much promise as this one, why leave anything up to chance?
