Pistons have backed themselves into a corner and may have just one savior

Trey Murphy III may be the only option left available to solve the Detroit Pistons' offensive problems alongside Cade Cunningham.

The Detroit Pistons haven’t addressed their biggest need of the offseason just yet. They need to bring in some additional offensive creation to pair alongside Cade Cunningham, but so far, they have not done that. Unfortunately, the market has almost entirely dried up. Now, it seems like New Orleans Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III is the only viable option for the Pistons to target.

Murphy has been a trade target for the Pistons for a long time. He’s been a top trade target for a lot of teams. But he’s still in New Orleans. And with how many other creators have already been traded (or signed in free agency), the Pistons’ options are rapidly dwindling.

Landing Murphy would make everything okay for Cunningham and the Pistons, but if they fail to land him, it doesn’t look like there are many other options left for them to go after.

Trey Murphy III may be the only option left for Pistons to solve creation issue

The Pistons have the bones of a championship contender. Last season, they were the best team in the Eastern Conference, but in the playoffs, they fell short in spectacular fashion.

In the first round, the Pistons struggled to generate offense outside of Cunningham, and they went to seven games against the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic. Then, in the second round, they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a seven-game series.

Tobias Harris gave the Pistons some offense at times, as did Daniss Jenkins and Caris LeVert. But it wasn’t nearly enough. When Cunningham didn’t have it going, Detroit was in a really rough spot.

So, heading into the summer, the Pistons very clearly needed to add some additional offensive creator to take the load off Cunningham. Yet outside of rookie Ebuka Okorie, they have yet to do that.

But Murphy could solve that problem. Adding him to the lineup would give the Pistons a great secondary scoring threat. Murphy’s long-range attack would be perfect in Detroit.

Plus, Murphy has just enough of a creation bag to him that it could solve some of the problems the Pistons dealt with in the postseason this past year.

Kawhi Leonard is off the market, having been traded to the Toronto Raptors. Tyler Herro seems like he’ll be staying on the Milwaukee Bucks. Norman Powell signed with the Chicago Bulls in free agency.

Options are drying up. Murphy may be the Pistons’ only option left available to fix their biggest problem. They need to act quickly before another team trades for him.
