The Detroit Pistons are going to be heading into next season with a very similar roster to the one they had last year. However, there is still a Jalen Duren-sized issue hanging over their heads. But even if they do end up bringing him back, their center rotation is still going to be a bit weak. Duren, Paul Reed, and two-way guys. That’s where the guard rotation could help out.
Cade Cunningham is going to lead the way. He’s the star of the show in Detroit. The best player the Pistons have on the roster. Then, they also have guys like Daniss Jenkins, Ebuka Okorie, and even Isaiah Joe (though he’s not a point guard). Centers can thrive on their own, but with a great ball-handler helping them out, they can reach a whole new level.
The Pistons’ point guard rotation can help their centers thrive next season. Duren, Reed, and even guys like Isaac Jones and Ugonna Onyenso have a chance to be at their best.
Pistons point guards can help center rotation thrive
Detroit didn’t make many additions this summer. The Pistons didn’t add any huge offensive creators next to Cunningham, and they didn’t bolster their center rotation after trading Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Yet the Pistons will still want to compete in the East. There’s no doubt that they’ll want to remain toward the top of the conference after finishing as the No. 1 seed last season.
In order to do that, the Pistons will have to bank on internal development. They need the players already on their roster to get better to make up for their relative lack of offseason changes.
John Collins, Joe, Taurean Prince, and Gary Harris are all fine pieces, but none of them are necessarily the types of players to completely alter the course of a franchise.
So, maybe it can all start at the point guard position. Obviously, Cunningham will lead the charge, but Jenkins, Okorie, and even Joe could help out with the playmaking as well.
If those guys can find success as handlers, setting up the Pistons’ center rotation, then that would help everyone on the roster improve.
Cunningham can help Duren get better. He can help Reed get better. He can maybe even help Jones find his footing in the NBA. That’s a good start.
But Jenkins and Okorie finding success as playmakers would be great, too. Because then those guys would also be able to elevate Detroit’s center rotation throughout the year.
