The worst-kept secret in the NBA is the Detroit Pistons’ struggles on the offensive end. Cade Cunningham is their top dog, and when he has the ball, things are okay. But the problem is, he doesn’t have a ton of support on that end. So, the Pistons need to find ways to create offense and succeed on that end. Offensive rebounding can help with that.
Last season, the Pistons were one of the best teams in the league at offensive rebounding. And for a team that struggled to generate consistent offense, that was a huge help. They were able to generate extra possessions, which is great, considering they don’t have a ton of creators. They need to double down on that philosophy moving forward.
Since the Pistons didn’t do much to solve their offensive creation problems this summer, they should be trying to get even better than they already are at offensive rebounding.
The Pistons need to double down on offensive rebounding
The Pistons didn’t make a ton of major moves this summer. They could have tried to make a big-swing trade to land a co-star for Cunningham, but they didn’t end up doing that.
Tobias Harris left in free agency, joining the San Antonio Spurs. They replaced him with John Collins, who seems like he will slot in as Detroit’s starting power forward.
Outside of that, the Pistons also traded for Isaiah Joe in a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Then, in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, they landed Taurean Prince and Gary Harris.
None of those guys are the types of players who can help Cunningham consistently create offense. Maybe Joe? But he would have to take a leap to get there.
So, crash the glass. The Pistons have a ton of great personnel that can help them crash the offensive boards consistently. That’s how they can generate more possessions on a nightly basis.
Ausar Thompson can be a monster on the glass with his athleticism. If they re-sign Jalen Duren, they should tell him to focus on the offensive boards.
Guys like Collins, Ron Holland II, Paul Reed, and even Javonte Green are equipped to help in that area. It just has to be a focus for the Pistons next year.
Since the offensive creation didn’t take a massive step in the right direction, the Pistons need to double down on their strengths. That includes crashing the offensive glass. It needs to be an even bigger focal point next season.
