The Detroit Pistons entered the offseason with some serious work to do. If they want to put Cade Cunningham in the best possible position to succeed, they need to give him some offensive help. The Toronto Raptors already traded for Kawhi Leonard. The Milwaukee Bucks have Tyler Herro, and there was no three-team deal. Detroit’s best options are slowly being taken off the board.

There are still options out there for the Pistons to target. They can find additional help for Cunningham on the trade market. If they play their cards right, they could find a way to get Cunningham some help. But the market is drying up. And if they don’t act soon, they could force Cunningham to go into next season with just as little help in the creation department.

If that happens, the Pistons are in danger of falling short in the playoffs, just like they did this past year.

Pistons are in danger of failing Cade Cunningham

During the Pistons’ playoff run this past year, they were left in a brutal position. If Cunningham didn’t have it going on the offensive end, then they were at an immediate disadvantage.

Tobias Harris stepped up at times, scoring in bunches from the mid-range. Daniss Jenkins did the same, and Caris LeVert even had a couple of moments throughout the postseason. But it wasn’t enough.

Not only did the Pistons struggle to take down the No. 8-seeded Orlando Magic – one of the worst offensive teams in the postseason – but they then fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round.

So, this summer, it was clear that the Pistons needed to get Cunningham some additional creation. But so far, all they’ve done is sign John Collins in free agency, lose Harris, and retain Kevin Huerter.

If that’s the end of the Pistons’ summer moves, it’s a pretty brutal offseason to digest, especially considering how much the rest of the East improved. Leonard and Herro have already been traded for, but there are other options out there.

Herro could still be a target for Detroit, but they failed to get him in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. And Leonard has already joined a different potential East contender.

The Pistons need to figure things out as soon as possible. They need to find another offensive creator to pair alongside Cunningham, and ideally a great one.

Because if they don’t do that, then they could end up falling flat in the East next season.
