After losing Game 1 against the Magic, the Pistons came out sluggish once again in Game 2 until waking up at halftime. In the third quarter, Detroit answered the call and responded with a 30-3 run after a tied game at half. With that incredible run, spanning over 6 minutes, the Pistons reminded the league that they were a juggernaut and dominant defense in the regular season.
The Pistons regained control by playing to their strengths
That run was sparked by all the things that have made the Pistons special all season long: an aggressive defense and the offensive brilliance of Cade Cunningham. After the Magic picked them apart in Game 1, the Pistons found their defensive rhythm by forcing turnovers in the third quarter. At the halfway mark of the quarter, Orlando had scored just 3 points in the frame and coughed the ball up 6 times.
The Pistons were able to disrupt every play for the Magic, regardless of who was involved in the action. By staying connected on a proverbial string, the Pistons were able to hide even their most glaring defensive weak links. It seemed like they got a great pep talk at halftime and figured out the Magic completely.
The most encouraging aspect of this run was how the Pistons didn't need to change their play style to dominate the Magic. After the first game, many critics were concerned that the Pistons wouldn't be able to play to their usual strengths against the size and defense of the Magic. But the Pistons emphatically proved that notion wrong in just a few minutes coming out of halftime.
Detroit has found their winning formula again
The Pistons have once again tapped into their unique defensive strengths that could make them a threat for a deep playoff run. They won 60 games in the regular season and led the Eastern Conference since November following this formula. Now that they've found this fire again, it could be dangerous news for the other top East contenders and especially the Orlando Magic, who could have to deal with this intensity for the remainder of the series.
This was the best-case scenario for the Pistons in Game 2 and sets them up well for the rest of this series and potentially future playoff rounds. Even without any uncharacteristic shooting luck, the Pistons were fully in control once they got rolling.
There was some panic around the Pistons following Game 1 but they are now in the same position where many other top teams find themselves. There are few 2-0 series right now, but losing one early playoff game doesn't disqualify a team from being a title contender. Especially if they can bounce back how the Pistons just did.
