Pistons' most obvious summer plan is obvious for a reason

The Detroit Pistons need to spend the summer focusing on adding more offensive talent next to Cade Cunningham.

The Detroit Pistons need help on the offensive end. That much is obvious, and this summer, their top priority needs to be addressing that issue. At this point, the Pistons’ need for additional offensive reinforcements has been talked about. And it will continue to be discussed all summer. But just because it’s obvious doesn’t mean it’s not true.

There’s a reason people are talking about how badly the Pistons need additional offense around Cade Cunningham – it’s because they do. Tobias Harris played his role perfectly in the playoffs (until he didn't). But it wasn’t nearly enough. Detroit still needs a second offensive option next to Cunningham, and the discourse is going to be loud.

As it should be. The Pistons need to add more offense this summer.

The Pistons obviously need to add more offense

The Pistons are built to be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference for a long, long time, and the biggest reason why that is the case is Cunningham. He’s already a top 10 player in the NBA. Who knows what he could be in five years?

However, as they are currently constructed, the Pistons are flawed. They are very talented, but they also have a flawed roster. And they need to address that this summer.

Detroit only scored 110 points in five of its 14 postseason games. In those five games, the Pistons went 4-1, and their only loss was an overtime defeat against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Meanwhile, in the nine games the Pistons failed to score 110 points, they went 3-6, including a 2-5 record when they scored 105 points or fewer. It’s never been more obvious that the Pistons need to improve their offense around Cunningham.

And Cunningham isn’t a perfect product. He still has rough games when he struggles to score efficiently. He still deals with high-turnover performances at times. But the Pistons don’t have a great offensive support system around him.

They were dependent on Harris, Daniss Jenkins, and Caris LeVert to be their secondary scoring options at times, especially since Jalen Duren’s production drastically declined in the postseason.

It’s never been more obvious that the Pistons need to make a significant addition this summer. They need to bring in an elite offensive talent to pair alongside Cunningham.

All offseason, that will be the talk of the town. But where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And there’s plenty of smoke in Detroit right now.

Sometimes, the most obvious problem is obvious for a reason. That’s the case with the Pistons’ offensive woes right now.
