The Detroit Pistons have a lot of work to do this summer, and signing Khris Middleton in free agency could be a decent idea to consider. Middleton has plenty of experience – he won a title with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021 – and could still provide a small offensive boost for the Pistons off the bench.
Cade Cunningham and the Pistons dealt with some offensive woes in the playoffs this year. Okay – a lot of offensive woes. Middleton obviously isn’t the answer to all the Pistons’ problems, but they need to add some quality depth pieces who can create, too. Middleton could be one of those guys.
His championship experience, veteran leadership, and shot creation make him a sneakily ideal target for the Pistons in free agency this summer.
Pistons should consider signing Khris Middleton in free agency
Middleton isn’t the first guy who comes to mind when it comes to offensive creation in the year 2026. However, he may still have just enough left in the tank to make it worth the Pistons’ while.
In his heyday, Middleton was the Bucks’ go-to perimeter creator alongside Antetokounmpo. He was the guy they went to when they needed a bucket in the mid-range or around the three-point line.
Obviously, those years are long gone. The Bucks traded him to the Washington Wizards, and from there, he was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks, where he finished this past season.
And while his numbers weren’t incredible with the Mavericks, Middleton still put up decent numbers. Good enough numbers for teams to think about bringing him on board as a bench piece.
Middleton appeared in 29 games for the Mavericks this season (16 starts, 21.2 minutes per contest). He averaged 10.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 40.4% from the floor and 39.1% from deep range on 3.0 three-point attempts per contest.
But Middleton wasn’t just putting up a few points a night. He was liable to explode for a monster performance in Dallas, and he enjoyed two of them during his time there.
Middleton scored 35 points in a win over the Memphis Grizzlies and poured in 25 in a win over the Indiana Pacers. Obviously, neither of those teams is incredible, but Middleton showed that he still has something left in the tank.
It would almost certainly be a minimum contract, but bringing Middelton back to Detroit for a full-circle moment could actually help the Pistons next season.
