#2: Are there minutes for Marcus Sasser in the Pistons’ rotation?

I don’t know if Marcus Sasser did anything in Summer League to assure his team that he can be the backup point guard.

Detroit obviously wanted to see what he looked like running the offense and it was about what you’d expect from a guy who is not really a point guard. Sasser can create for himself and has enough dribble and hesitation moves to create space to get his shot off, but he’s not going to blow by people or break down a defense in ways that help his teammates much.

And when he does, he tends to get into trouble, which is how he averaged 3.4 turnovers in Summer League to just 5.2 assists.

Sasser still has opportunities, as JJ Bickerstaff has already talked about staggering Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey (novel idea), which would potentially leave minutes for Sasser as a bench guard off the ball. But if Detroit signs another point guard, Sasser may be pushed even further down on the depth chart and there have to be concerns about the idea of him and Ivey playing together given their lack of size and defense.

It’s difficult to see how Sasser fits in considering the veteran guards the Pistons just added coupled with his lack of true point guard skills.
