The Detroit Pistons want to see if their roster can gel this season before they make any major moves, but you can bet the Pistons will be busy at the NBA trade deadline.

They obviously need more veteran talent, as it's not easy to win with such a young team, and all of their veterans have either been hurt or are on expiring contracts, or both.

At some point, the Pistons will have to take a risk and try to land a star, but they also need role players who can defend and shoot, as their bench has been horrible this season and has been in a freefall of late.

Monte Morris was supposed to be that steady hand off the bench, but he has yet to play and by the time he gets back in February (if he does) the season will likely be over if it isn't already (it is).

Morris is on an expiring deal, and the Pistons may want to bring him back, but they could also look to pick the bones of a team that might soon blow up their roster.

Detroit Pistons: Trading with the Chicago Bulls

The Pistons have recently been mentioned as possible suitors for Zach LaVine, a move I would be reluctant to make unless it didn't involve Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson or Jalen Duren. That seems unlikely.

There has even been talk of the Pistons trading for Patrick Williams, and they could probably get him if they want him, but the Pistons have done enough dumpster diving over the last three seasons and need to get a proven contributor, not another high ceiling hope.

The Chicago Bulls player the Pistons should pursue is veteran guard Alex Caruso. He's a very good defender who can shoot the 3-ball, he'd be a fit with either Cade or Ivey and he's on a value deal that only extends one more season.

Caruso is not a star, but he's a good player who would help the Pistons' defense and shooting, their two biggest weaknesses. The Pistons already have a lot of guards, so one of them would have to go in the trade, which begs the question, what would it take to get Caruso?

If the Bulls do decide to blow it up and rebuild, Caruso will be one of their best trade chips given his contract and proven impact. He's an All-Defensive player who is currently shooting 47.7 percent from long range, so there will be plenty of teams interested in his services, especially when you consider he's owed just $9.8 million next season.

The Bulls would likely want draft picks and/or young talent in return, so any deal would probably have to start with either Marcus Sasser or Killian Hayes. From there, the Pistons could throw in an expiring contract (Burks) and some second-round picks, but that might not be enough if Caruso has a line of suitors willing to give up more. Someone will offer a first-round pick, which might be a non-starter for Detroit.

Yes, the Pistons need more star power, but they also need veterans who know how to play the game and can help their young guards develop. Caruso would fit that role well and should be a guy the Pistons are monitoring.
