Best contract #2: Simone Fontecchio, 2 years/$16 million

I was actually shocked when I saw this one, both in terms of the years and the money. I expected Fontecchio to get at least as much as Stewart got, with an annual salary close to $15-16 million but instead he got that for two years.

Fontecchio is betting that he’ll put up similar numbers as he did in his short time with the Pistons last season and be able to secure one more big deal in two years with an upgrade in annual salary.

There’s no downside to this deal for Detroit, as he’s a productive player at that cost and can help the development of their younger guys, but they can flip him anytime for assets.

I love what Fontecchio brings to this team, but they may be able to trade him for picks at some point or extend him for a few more seasons if things are working well.

All good teams need contracts like this, as they allow your front office to invest resources in other areas. Fontecchio may end up as one of the best value deals in the NBA and along with Beasley the Pistons have two guys who are both short and long-term assets.
