As the worst team in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons will have plenty of work to do on their roster this offseason.
I recently asked fans what they thought the biggest offseason roster need was, and most of the answers came back with some form of “new owner,” “fire Troy,” or “replace the coach,” which is not exactly what I had in mind when I asked for “roster” needs.
But I will start there, as we look at the Detroit Pistons’ biggest needs this offseason and the dream candidates to fill them.
Detroit Pistons’ biggest offseason needs
A new GM
Candidates: Trajan Langdon, Tommy Balcetis, Peter Dinwidde, Tayshaun Prince
I’ll play along even though I have serious doubts that Troy Weaver will be relieved of his duties as Pistons’ GM this summer. But if he is, there are a number of interesting candidates to replace him, including Trajan Langdon, current GM of the Pelicans. Langdon is smart and has a keen eye for talent, as we’ve seen with New Orleans, where he has found guys like Herb Jones, Jose Alvarado and Trey Murphy III later in the draft.
Tommy Balcetis is a young rising star in the Nuggets organization, a former player at Harvard who is known for his savvy use of analytics as he helped build a champion in a mid-market city as assistant GM. He’ll be getting the big job for someone soon.
Peter Dinwiddie is also known for his use of analytics as executive VP of the 76ers and how about former Pistons great Tayshaun Prince? He’s been VP of Basketball Affairs in Memphis and many view him as a guy who will eventually be a GM.
