If there is one thing that has united fans of the Detroit Pistons this season, it’s been criticism of Monty Williams, specifically his rotations.

After signing a record-breaking deal to become the coach (after plenty of persuasion and zeroes added to his paycheck) fans were excited about the addition of Monty Williams. I’ve seen plenty of liars claiming (with the advantage of hindsight) that they wanted Kevin Ollie, but I’d need to see receipts to believe it.

Most fans were happy that the Pistons landed a coach with a track record of success, one that had recently turned around a bad Phoenix Suns’ team and gotten them to the NBA Finals whilst winning Coach of the Year.

But there has been no such turnaround in Detroit, as the Pistons are miraculously worse than they were last season and are threatening to have the fewest wins in franchise, if not league, history. Williams certainly won’t be winning Coach of the Year and the Pistons seem even further from the mythical restoration they’ve been telling us about.

Fans love to focus on a coach’s rotation, as it’s one of the things that anyone can understand. Not everyone digs into the X’s and O’s but any fan can watch a game and say, “I’d rather see more Jaden Ivey than Killian Hayes,” or “why the hell is he running an all-bench unit out again?”

The all-bench units have been the bane of the Pistons’ existence this season, and make little sense, as they aren’t a deep team and need to keep some of their best players on the floor at all times to even have a chance.

But that hasn’t stopped Monty from continuing to roll them out there even though he has repeatedly said he wouldn’t, a broken promise one fan has taken to heart.

Detroit Pistons fan takes shot at Monty Williams

At a recent Pistons’ home game, fan @orchard_drew (On Twitter X) was spotted by the cameraman wearing a shirt that summarized the fanbase’s feelings about the all-bench units Williams continues to use.

If he actually makes good on this, he might be wearing this shirt for a while, as Monty used an all-bench unit in both games since the All-Star break and there is no sign he's going to stop. We can expect this to continue, so that shirt may be stinking by the end of the season, as Williams still hasn’t even had his full complement of players since the Pistons swapped out half their roster at the trade deadline.

Good luck to you sir, and those who live with or near you, as you may be wearing that shirt for 26 more games.
