Detroit Pistons free-agent rumors

James Edwards III of The Athletic (subscription) recently named Gary Harris, Malik Monk and Nic Claxton as free agents the Pistons will pursue this summer. It’s possible they could land all three, though Monk and Harris would probably be overkill. So, what would these additions mean to the guys currently on the Pistons?

Free-agent Gary Harris can challenge Jaden Ivey

Gary Harris fits the mold of one thing the Pistons need, which is 3-and-D role players. He’s a 37 percent 3-point shooter for his career and plays quality defense on the perimeter.

But he also misses a ton of games, only topping 60 or more three times in his 10-year career. This is not a guy you can count on to play every game, but he has started most of the games he’s played.

Just a season ago, he started 42 out of 48 games for Orlando and knocked down 43 percent of his 3-point shots on 4.5 attempts per game. Coupled with his defense, that’s a player who fits well with Cade Cunningham, which could force Jaden Ivey to the bench.

It seems unlikely a guy who averaged 6.9 points per game per season could supplant Jaden Ivey in the starting five, but you can’t rule it out, especially if a move to the bench allowed Ivey to spend more time on the ball.
