Free-agent Malik Monk sends Jaden Ivey to the bench or pushes him to the next level

Malik Monk spent the last two seasons coming off the bench for the Sacramento Kings, where he established himself as one of the most consistent 6th men in the league.

But it’s hard to see him in a bench role on the Pistons, though Jaden Ivey would certainly have something to say about that. Monk averaged over 15 points per game last season, but wasn’t particularly efficient, in fact, his numbers were barely better than Ivey’s.

This is why I’m not a huge fan of Monk in free agency. Yes, he’s a good 6th man who can score off the bounce or catch, but he’s never been a consistently lights-out shooter from long range, averaging just 35 percent for his career.

A slight jump in efficiency and Jaden wouldn’t lose his spot to Monk, and Monk’s presence may light a fire under Ivey, not that he needs it. Monk would either take Ivey’s spot or push him to the next level.

I don’t particularly understand the fascination with Monk, as he has a lot of crossover with the guards they already have. He would add depth and potentially more consistency off the bench, but the Pistons have more pressing needs.
