The Detroit Pistons have just over 30 percent of the 2023-24 season to try and salvage something positive.

Between the historic losing streak, mismanaged roster, injuries and arrest, this has been a season best buried and forgotten forever, but it's not over yet, the worst record in league history is still in play and as we've learned this season, there is no bottom to this abyss.

This will be the most important offseason in recent memory, as the Pistons have to decide whether to stick with the front office that produced this mess, whether to keep a coach whose mind seems to be elsewhere and what to do with the eight open roster spots they'll have when it is mercifully over.

The Pistons only have seven roster spots filled for next season, so many of their players will be fighting for future jobs with Detroit (or someone else) in the remaining 28 games.

But let's start with the coach.

Monty Williams

As I said yesterday for all of the people who love to comment on articles that they didn't read, I do not think Monty Williams will be fired.

There are just too many extenuating circumstances and he's owed too much money to give up after just one season, especially after his GM admitted he didn't do enough in the offseason to improve the roster.

Williams has been quantifiably bad, but he's also playing with a garbage roster that just got completely overhauled.

But I wouldn't entirely rule out the possibility of him getting fired if the team really struggles down the homestretch, only wins a couple more games and it appears they have checked out. I also wouldn't completely rule out some kind of buyout if he decides his heart isn't in it.

Tom Gores has eaten more money over the years than that last slot machine in the Las Vegas airport, so what's a few million more?

I don't think it will happen, but Monty does need to show he has some idea of where this team is headed other than back to the lottery.
