Free-agent need: A veteran point guard
Right now, the Pistons don’t really have a backup point guard depending on how you view Jaden Ivey and Marcus Sasser.
Ivey can certainly fill that role in stretches, but has to improve his decision making and cut down on the turnovers. Even if he does, he’s a score-first point guard and the Pistons could still use a veteran, even if it is just for mentorship and guidance.
The Pistons tried to fill that role with Patrick Beverley, but after striking out, they could pivot to options like Tyus Jones or Markelle Fultz.
Dennis Smith Jr and Patty Mills would be cheaper options to explore, but at some point, it’s a need that has to be addressed.
Jones may be too talented for the role the Pistons are offering and Fultz doesn’t necessarily fit the need, which could also be said about Dennis Smith.
If the Pistons can’t find someone ideal for that role, they may just try to add the best player available, in which case there is one very interesting name still on the market.
