Grade the trade: Pistons trade Killian Hayes for Gordon Hayward in proposed deal

I wouldn't mind the Pistons using one of their young guards to land a veteran, but it seems pointless to go after one in decline who is on an expiring deal the Pistons would want no part of renewing. You'd be renting an average veteran for part of one season.

Killian Hayes has actually been playing well of late, so I'd rather see if he can keep improving, though he's certainly nowhere near untouchable.

The part I don't like about this deal is the pick, as that 2nd-rounder next summer is going to be at the top of the round, tacitly a late first-round pick, which is way too much to give up for part of a season of Gordon Hayward. That's a pick the Pistons might be able to use to move up in the draft, as they did this past year.

That pick is hardly a major asset, but neither is Gordon Hayward, who I like as a player, but it just seems pointless to go after him right now. If you take the pick out of this, I think it makes more sense, at least for the Pistons, but with the pick, it's too much to give up for Hayward at this stage in his career.

Grade: D+
