It's make or break for these 4 Pistons next season
Jalen Duren
What he needs to do:
-Improve defensively
Jalen Duren has the easiest assignment of these four players as there is only one thing he needs to do this offseason and that’s work on his defense.
The 20-year-old is already ahead of schedule on offense, where he is a weapon in the pick-and-roll and a very good passer for his size and age.
But it makes no difference if he doesn’t improve on defense, as there are plenty of bigs in the NBA who can dunk and rebound, skills that are not worth a massive extension.
Duren is extension eligible next summer, so he has to make strides defensively or the Pistons will cash out while his mystique is still there.
That means blocking closer to two shots per game than one, putting in more effort on defense than on offense, running back hard at all times, making quality reads and being in the right position.
Many of these will come with time and we often forget that Duren can’t even legally buy a beer yet, so improvements will come.
Playing with the US Select team this summer should help, but the Pistons also need to bring in a big man coach who can help Duren get to the next level defensively.
If he does, the Pistons will have one of the best young bigs in the game.
