3 Most iconic plays in Detroit Pistons history
The Shot
It’s fitting that another iconic moment was carried about by one of the role players of the 1990 championship team.
The Bad Boys Pistons were really two teams, as their bench was as good as some of the starting lineups around the league, which is why I have argued that the first championship team was a top-5 team of all time.
One of those bench guys was Vinnie “Microwave” Johnson, who got his name because he heated up fast or he was shaped like a microwave, I’m not sure.
Modern fans might not understand this, but Johnson was known for his mid-range shooting (that big space between a dunk and a 3-point shot that no one uses anymore) and didn’t disappoint in the Finals, hitting the game winner to clinch the Pistons’ second-straight title.
The play itself is nothing spectacular, but it what it symbolized was. The Pistons were called a fluke after beating the Lakers the year before and most people thought they were a one off. But this shot and a resounding 4-1 series win cemented the Pistons into history.
