NBA trade rumors: Pistons trades could set up bigger moves
Other trade rumors with the Detroit Pistons
The Pistons are getting phone calls about Isaiah Stewart according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
The New Orleans Pelicans are the most recent team to show interest, as they need to bolster their big-man depth and Stewart would be a nice fit.
The problem is that New Orleans isn't going to take on extra money and go into the luxury tax, as they gave away Kira Lewis Jr. earlier in the season to avoid it. This makes it difficult to find a trade with the Pistons unless there is a third team involved, as the Pelicans don't have the right contracts to match.
Stewart has a "poison pill" stipulation as a recently signed player, so his outgoing salary is around $13 million, which is difficult for the Pelicans to match without including Larry Nance Jr. which makes little sense for either team.
The Pelicans have forwards the Pistons would love to have in Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, but both are playing key roles for New Orleans and are likely too much to give up for Stewart, and in the case of TMIII, the money doesn't work.
So any deal between New Orleans and Detroit would likely require an additional team, but this is one rumor to monitor as the trade deadline draws near.
