3 Problems with a potential blockbuster trade between Pistons and Hawks
Possible blockbuster trade between the Pistons and Hawks
Begley noted in his article that several other teams are interested in Murray, including the Nets, Knicks and Lakers, all teams far closer to contention than the last-place Pistons.
They are also teams that could potentially put together better trade packages, especially if Detroit doesn't want to include Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson or Jalen Duren.
But Detroit does have expiring contracts and could help Atlanta open up a ton of future cap space to build with by taking on one of their long-term contracts along with Murray's.
De'Andre Hunter still has three years left on his deal after this one ranging from $21-24 million which the Hawks reportedly would love to shed. On paper, Hunter is a nice fit with the Pistons as a 3-and-D wing who is shooting over 40 percent from long range this season.
But Hunter is always hurt (he's hurt now), so the Pistons would be taking on a lot of future money for a player fraught with risk.
It's also unlikely that the Hawks would even accept that deal, as Sasser and a future 1st is not a great return for Murray, even if they could get off Hunter's deal in the process.
All of this makes Murray a tough fit, as the Pistons don't want to give up Jaden Ivey to get him, would still potentially have some of the same problems anyway and may not even have the ammo to get a deal done.
There might be smoke behind this fire, but for now, a move like this doesn't make much sense for the Pistons or Hawks.
