Trajan Langdon has taken a smart approach to his first offseason as president of basketball operations of the Detroit Pistons.

He clearly wants to see more from these young players before making any rash decisions and has set a timeline for the team with the free-agent contracts he gave out this summer, none of which extend beyond two years.

If everything goes right, the Pistons will be more competitive, maybe even sniff the play-in next season and then go into the next one with ascending young players and money coming off the books.

They have the right assets and expiring contracts to eventually trade for a star player and theoretically the young players will be ready to be a real threat by then.

So, it’s not too early to think about which star players the Pistons could target when they are ready to make a trade.

There are four teams who could look to blow things up if they don’t improve next season and the Pistons should be ready to pounce.

Miami Heat: Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo

The Heat did little to improve this summer after finishing just 8th in the Eastern Conference last season.

It’s unclear exactly what they are up to, as the Heat don’t appear primed to compete for a title, but are definitely good enough to make the playoffs if things go right. Are they just hoping to get there and that Jimmy Butler will get hot and carry them again?

If the Heat are battling for the play-in again, it’s hard to see them keeping this team together, as Butler only has one guaranteed year left on his deal. Adebayo has two and Herro has three.

Of the three, the Heat are most likely to keep Adebayo if they do blow things up. Tyler Herro is not an ideal fit with Cade Cunningham because of his defense, but he’s a bucket with playoff experience who fits the timeline and whose contract doesn’t look bad.

He’s a name to watch if Miami gets off to a slow start next season.
