It’s increasingly looking as if the Detroit Pistons will not be in the mix for any of the stars in free agency.

Trajan Langdon talked about not taking shortcuts in his opening presser and also mentioned the possibility of taking on contracts for assets, which doesn’t sound like a guy who plans to make a big splash in free agency.

There limited options for stars anyway, but free agency does have plenty of quality role players, so it’s more likely we see the Pistons dabble around the fringes rather that pour most of their cap space into one guy.

Langdon has connections to one free agent who would be a perfect fit in Detroit.

Detroit Pistons free agency: Naji Marshall

I used to cover the Pelicans, so this is a 100 percent biased opinion, but I love Naji Marshall.

He’s the type of player who will take on any defensive assignment, the type who is the first to pick a teammate up off the floor, the first one to protect his star teammates in a scuffle.

In other words, he’d be a perfect Detroit Piston and one that would be a fan favorite five minutes after his arrival.

He’s the prototypical glue guy who can defend several positions, make plays in transition and has improved his 3-point shooting to over 38 percent. His numbers don’t tell the full story of his value, as he’s a good enough ballhandler and passer to be a connector on offense and makes the types of hustle plays that don’t show up in stats.

Regardless of which path the Pistons choose, Marshall would be a fit. Detroit is one of several teams rumored to be interested in his services and may have an advantage given Langdon’s connections to Marshall from New Orleans.

One area Detroit was sorely lacking this season was veteran role players, as Troy Weaver did nothing last offseason and the guys they did have were mostly injured.

Marshall is just entering his prime at age 26 and could be a valuable addition when it comes to changing the culture in Detroit.

Marshall is coming off a minimum deal, so he's going to get a raise, but should still be a value contract who will help the Detroit Pistons take the next step of their evolution.
