The Detroit Pistons don’t have the best center depth in the world. They traded Isaiah Stewart this summer, and now, Jalen Duren is going to miss a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. That leaves Paul Reed as the only real available center. Obviously, the Duren issue is short-term, but adding extra center depth could be smart. Enter, Precious Achiuwa.
Achiuwa is currently wasting away on an absolutely awful Sacramento Kings squad. A Kings team that has yet to win a game this season – the last winless team in the league. But Achiuwa has been putting up some solid numbers. And on Thursday night, he had his best game of the season so far.
Maybe the Pistons are completely comfortable with the centers they already have on the roster, especially when Duren gets healthy again. But Achiuwa is certainly emerging as a very interesting trade candidate.
Precious Achiuwa could be a Pistons trade target idea
After a rocky start to his career with the Miami Heat and the Toronto Raptors – lots of potential, but not much to show for it – Achiuwa has been enjoying a reemergence in the last few seasons.
On Thursday night, in the Kings’ loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Achiuwa finished the game with 24 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and four steals while shooting 12-of-27 from the field (and 0-of-2 from distance).
Achiuwa is playing power forward right now, suiting up alongside Domantas Sabonis in the frontcourt. But he could definitely play center for the Pistons if need be.
He’s found a home in Sacramento for now. However, if he plays well enough, perhaps the Kings could decide to trade him for positive value at the deadline, especially considering he’s on very solid contract.
This season, Achiuwa is making just under $5.5 million. And he only has one more year left on his deal after that. During the 2027-28 season, Achiuwa is going to make over $5.7 million.
Those are very, very manageable numbers, especially considering the current restrictions of the CBA and the second apron. Achiuwa can be acquired pretty easily by most teams in the league.
The Pistons are one of them. Adding him to the center room alongside Duren and Reed would beef things up. And Achiuwa being able to play the power forward spot, too, means they could keep him in the rotation even when Duren gets healthy again.
If the price is right, Achiuwa could be a very interesting trade candidate for the Pistons to consider by the deadline.
