Asa Newell, 6’9 Forward, Georgia

Asa Newell might be the most intriguing on this list of possible selections. He played his high school ball with Cooper Flagg at Montverde and now plans to be the go-to guy at Georgia. Just based on his physical appearance, Newell uses his 6-foot-9 frame and motor to be extremely active and disrupt shots as a shot blocker. He posted a 3rd best 2.3 blocks per game at the U19 World Cup in 2023, and is extremely quick for a big wing. On the offensive side, Newell is unselfish, above average in the pick and pop game, and has shown promise from the perimeter, but will have to prove that his shot is legit this upcoming year.

Asa has gotten better each year, and if he can elevate his game even further, he can be a tremendous asset for Detroit as a fluid, big three/four wing who can step out and connect from deep, and be active on the defensive end. That combination doesn’t grow on trees, so if Detroit slides out of the top five, Asa Newell would be a great consolation prize.

Bonus Second Round Selections to Watch

Jaxon Robinson, 6’6 Shooting Guard, Kentucky

Collin Murray-Boyles, 6’7 Power Forward, South Carolina
