Jalen Duren: B+

Duren ended the preseason averaging a block per game, which is the first step towards getting where the Pistons need him to be. He wasn’t perfect on defense by any means, but  he was more active and often in better position, especially off the ball. He still needs a lot of work in space, but having better defenders in front of him will help. I do think Duren tried to do a bit too much on offense at times, but the Pistons want him to make plays and to push in transition when he gets the chance.

Jaden Ivey: A

Ivey was the Pistons’ most impressive player in preseason, at least on the offensive end. His defense is still a work in progress, but there are signs, especially when it comes to effort. Ivey was picking up ballhandlers full court, which I love, as it engages him in the play immediately and forces the ball to go to someone else. Ivey was also using his speed to flash into passing lanes for steals, something that can be a weapon for him. Offensively, we saw everything we wanted to see, as Ivey was efficient, looked far better on his 3-point shots (the new form is a huge improvement) and was more patient and careful with the ball.

He still has a long way to go as a lead ballhandler when Cade Cunningham is on the bench, but Ivey showed the ability to get to the rim at will and to draw fouls, which is where he is going to eat this season. I’ve had my doubts about Ivey and he still needs to show he can do this consistently, as he had similar hot streaks last season, but I am excited about where he is headed and ready to eat my words.
