The Pistons’ biggest news of the offseason was a betting scandal that still hasn’t been resolved, and unfortunately the Miami Heat can also relate. The Pistons (or any other team) still haven’t signed Malik Beasley, the centerpiece of their scandal. But the Heat began the season with Terry Rozier, who had his own betting allegations, and it’s come back to haunt them.

The Heat are paying for Rozier’s allegations

Terry Rozier was arrested in connection to alleged sports gambling back in October. He is now in court proceedings for an alleged sports betting scheme. This all came after the NBA previously cleared him of wrongdoing in their own investigation.

The Heat have gotten very unlucky in this fiasco. Although they are not necessarily missing Rozier’s play on the court, his salary slot is causing issues. They’ve emerged as a potential suitor for Bucks megastar Giannis Antetokounmpo, but confusion about Rozier’s contract could hold them back from making a big move.

However, they’ve fought their way to a respectable record this season by adding significant depth in the offseason. Their deep cast of versatile players and excellent coaching guided them to a hot start. But it’s now clear that the Heat need a major upgrade to become true contenders.

Rozier is still on the books for $26 million this season, the last of his contract. Obviously, no team is currently lining up for his services. But he would be perfect salary filler in a big trade…if the Heat are even allowed to trade him. The NBA still hasn't provided a clear answer to that question as they navigate this uncharted situation.

On the other hand, the Pistons actually got lucky with Beasley. Since allegations about him broke out when he was a free agent, they never signed him. They were then able to use that cap space to shift towards other signings that have paid off tremendously. It didn't seem like it at the time, but hearing Malik Beasley's news at the right time was the best thing for the Pistons.

If Beasley is cleared one day, the Pistons can welcome him back. But the team has thrived without him so far. It's no fault of his own, but rather a testament to the impressive backup gameplan from the Pistons front office and the continued growth of their young stars.

The Heat had a similar situation at the beginning of the season with Rozier providing little on-court value. But they are now at a tipping point where they can re-enter contender status but Rozier is holding them back. It's an unparalleled nightmare for the front office and something the Pistons were very fortunate to avoid.
