Tyler Herro trade package is appealing without surprising name for the Pistons

This seems like a good deal for Detroit

The Detroit Pistons have been attached to myriad names in trade speculation, including Tyler Herro, and in most packages for a second star, Detroit is giving up some combination of Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland, Duncan Robinson and/or Caris LeVert along with draft compensation.

But in a recent trade proposal from Bleacher Report, the Pistons land Herro without giving up Holland:

In this trade, the Pistons are giving up their heart in Isaiah Stewart, along with expiring bust Caris LeVert, an unprotected pick in 2027 and a second rounder in the same year.

This trade package is far less than we’ve seen the Pistons giving up for other scorers, so Detroit would at least have to think this one over, especially since it does not include Holland, who is still only 20 years old and has a world of upside the Pistons want to develop.

This trade also doesn’t include this year’s draft pick, which has a very good chance of being higher than next year’s, so the Pistons still have a chance to add young talent from a deep draft.

This is a trade the Pistons would have to consider, even though it would mean the end of the Beef Stew era in Detroit.

If Herro is healthy, he helps the Pistons get to the next level

Herro is a Bonafide 20+ppg scorer who shoots the 3-ball at a high level and can handle the ball as a secondary option. He’s also deadly off the catch-and-shoot and would get plenty more of those opportunities with an elite playmaker in Cade Cunningham.

He pretty much ticks all the boxes for what the Pistons need offensively, and their defense is good enough to absorb him. Herro has been to the Finals, so it’s not as if he gets played off the floor in the playoffs.

Speaking of which, the Pistons haven’t gotten much out of Isaiah Stewart in either of the last two postseasons, the first because of injury and the second probably because of injury though no one wants to admit it.

Injured or not, Stew was outplayed by Paul Reed and there is only so much they can invest in the center spot with Jalen Duren set to get a big raise.

A move like this would also push Duncan Robinson to the bench, which strengthens a weakness, so would have a ripple effect on the entire offense.

The red flags with Herro are his defense and the fact that he has not been healthy, as he only played 33 games this season, but if you are getting the All-Star Herro from the season before, he very much fits the mold of the second scorer the Pistons need.

When it comes to trades, the Pistons aren't going to get much more value for this particular trade package, so B/R came up with an interesting possibility for Detroit.
