Why the Pacers do it:
This summer the pacers showed that they are willing to shake things up to compete. Removing Frank Vogel and bringing in Nate McMillan, adding Thaddeus Young, Al Jefferson, Aaron Brooks and Jeff Teague, this team has an all new look. This move would be another step in that direction. Caldwell-Pope and Ellis shared similar production on offense, but Caldwell-Pope is a significantly better defender. Lining up next to Teague, he would give the backcourt better perimeter defense and round out the offense nicely. Aron Baynes would fit well into the rotation and provide excellent back up minutes, increasing the pacers depth and strength. All in all, it would increase this teams ability to match up with Cleveland, Toronto and anyone else at the top of the East.

Why the Pistons do it:
This move only make sense for the Pistons if they are planning on losing both Caldwell-Pope and Baynes next year. While Ellis shot an identical 30.9 percentage from three-point range last year as Caldwell-Pope, he is nowhere near the defender. This deal would allow the Pistons to save on cap space, move Stanley Johnson into the starting position and bring Ellis off the bench as a scoring machine. The addition of Glenn Robinson III and a future draft pick give the Pistons potential tools to manage the loss of Caldwell-Pope and build depth for the future.
