Why the Mavericks do it:

The Mavericks get an upgraded scorer and defender in Caldwell-Pope over Matthews. They become younger and more athletic too. When you add in Baynes, Smith and Bullock the Mavs even become much deeper. It would also be fun to see the Aussie Assassins, Bogut and Baynes banging bodies and dominating the boards. Best of all, with less than $60 million on the books next year, the Mavs would be able to lock up Caldwell-Pope as Harrison Barnes’ long-term running mate. Lastly, as Nowitzki’s final contract comes off the books the year after next, the Mavs will be able to add another piece and potentially return to prominence.

Why the Pistons do it:

If the Pistons shy away from paying the luxury tax, this deal would provide the Pistons with an excellent side-step. Wesley Matthews has proven to be a solid defender, excellent teammate, and a three-point marksman, averaging 38.7 percent from the three-point line for his career. He would quickly fill the void left by Caldwell-Pope, and his team-friendly contract and veteran leadership will fit well in Detroit. While a few years older, J.J. Barea would be an upgrade at the backup point position, and the additional minutes for Stanley Johnson would lead to quicker development.
