How much steam did the Reggie Jackson-Ricky Rubio trade rumor pick up? Enough to concern Jackson’s agent. Apparently the text sent to Reggie Jackson from Stan Van Gundy last night was because his agent caught wind of the trade.
Many of us were questioning the validity of the Reggie Jackson-Ricky Rubio trade rumor from yesterday.
It wasn’t the source–Marc Stein is an excellent reporter who’s well informed in NBA circles–but the details of the trade. Rubio for Jackson? Rubio is an excellent defender and facilitator, but his game is eerily similar to Ish Smith’s.
Having two point guards on the team that can’t shoot could create serious issues offensively.
It was a bizarre trade rumor that has since been squashed, but it was legitimate enough that it caught Jackson’s agent’s attention.
"I texted Reggie and just said, ‘This is crazy season, and we’re not trading you for Ricky Rubio,'” Van Gundy told reporters after the Pistons’ morning shootaround in advance of their Saturday night home game against Washington.“That was it. I don’t normally address it, but the fact that it was out there and it concerned his agent [Aaron Mintz] enough to call, I addressed it. “I’m not denying that the discussion took place — they take place all the time. But that’s a lot different than consideration. And clearly we didn’t make that move.”"
Interesting bit at the end, though nothing to get overly worked up about.
Every player is available for the right price, according to Van Gundy. So G.M. Jeff Bower discussing a trade for Jackson shouldn’t be taken as anything more than testing the waters, right?
Well, maybe.
I do think this rumor was just a discussion which can be a tricky word for fans when it comes to trades. Essentially, this trade appears to have been am idea verbally talked about, but nothing more.
I don’t think we should make anything more of it than that. But, I will say that I think Reggie Jackson is much more available today than he was last season.
It would take the right price for the Pistons to trade Jackson. It’s a price I doubt gets paid which means Jackson is likely a Pistons until the asking price goes down.
Next: Pistons only trading if it makes team obviously better
So to recap, a Jackson trade is likely more probable than it was a season ago. But the Pistons won’t unload him without getting what they think is fair value.
