The Detroit Pistons would likely be very interested in this year’s top pick in the NBA draft, should it be available. According to reports, the Boston Celtics want to add an all-star caliber front-court player to help them win now. Is there a deal here?
The Detroit Pistons needs have been explored in detail this offseason, so I don’t need to tell you why the team should be, and is, looking to add star talent or high upside players.
What I do want to do, however, is reevaluate a trade for the Boston Celtics’ top pick in this year’s draft.
According to a report that popped up last week, the Boston Celtics are looking to add an all-star caliber front-court player.
"“Multiple league sources have told CSNNE.com in recent weeks that the Celtics are focused on landing an All-Star caliber talent in the frontcourt. That makes sense when you consider how guard-dominant the Celtics were this season and how that had a negative impact on the team’s rebounding and, to a lesser degree, their defense as a whole.”"
The Celtics want to add an all-star caliber front-court player who rebounds you say? Does that have Andre Drummond written all over it, or what?
I’m not a big Drummond fan when it comes to his defense, but if anyone could improve that area of his game, it’s Brad Stevens.

On the other end, the Pistons would be open to adding a high upside point guard, that the top of this year’s draft presents, in order to move on from Reggie Jackson and his contract.
Moreover, if the Pistons did trade Drummond for the top pick, and they were able to move Jackson, they likely solved their salary cap issues.
The more I think about a Drummond trade to the Celtics, the more right it feels.
The question is, would either side be willing to pull the trigger on that type of deal? On Detroit’s side, a top pick is great, but it’s still a big risk.
On Boston’s side, even if they could help Drummond become a dominant force, there’s still no guarantee he can learn to shoot a free throw at a high enough level, which means they would be in really tight spots in critical games.
Still, I think this hypothetical trade makes a lot of sense, and I could see myself pulling the trigger from either organization’s point of view.
