Every year the FanSided Fandom 250 attempts to rank the best fan bases in the world, regardless of what they’re fans of. It doesn’t matter where they are from, they could be from sports, movies, TV shows, individual actors or athletes, or musicians. It ranks the top 250 but then also breaks it down into each individual category from where each fan base has come from (e.g. college, or movies).
How do they rank them?
Well over the year FanSided editors meet to discuss, and rank fan bases across the world. They look for several things, including:
- Buzz (What’s happened through the year, are they being talked about)
- Longevity
- Size
- Worth
- Passion (You may not have the most fans, but how much passion do the fans show).
This year the Ohio State Buckeyes took the title of best fan base in the world, edging out Game of Thrones, which if you ask me is pretty damn impressive. The Buckeyes finished eighth last year. See the full results here if you’re interested.
This year in the NBA category there was a total of 12 teams that featured, with a few surprises.
The NBA category was won by none other than the Golden State Warriors (surprise), followed by the Los Angeles Lakers and in an actual surprise (to me at least) the Philadelphia 76ers in third. Last year only nine NBA teams featured, with first and second the exact same.
What probably won’t come as a surprise to many, the Detroit Pistons did not feature in the 250 at all.
It’s been an interesting couple of years for the Detroit Pistons. After being a playoff regular and winning the NBA championship in 2004 with the “Goin’ to Work” Pistons, they tried to accelerate a rebuild and ended up making some poor personnel decisions. This caused a playoff drought for the team, and a lot of fans to lose trust in their team. After making the playoffs two seasons ago, there was a sense of hope, but a poor season last year dampened that a little bit.
This season moving into a new arena created a little buzz and the Detroit Pistons started off hot, and have struggled recently in their toughest part of the schedule! Prior to the season there was a lot of hope and a building fan base again, but this latest stretch has some made fans hesitant. What Detroit Pistons fans need to realize is that the team is in good hands and has made excellent decisions over the last few years, they are going in the right direction. Yes as fans, we want to see results but put it into context.
