What is one area you wish Stan Van Gundy was better for Detroit Pistons?

Stan Van Gundy has taken the Detroit Pistons to a respectable level which is a pretty big deal considering how bad the franchise was before him. However, the Pistons have sort of plateaued over the last few years, and there are areas some feel that the team could have done a better job in.

The Detroit Pistons, in the Stan Van Gundy era, have been excellent in improving the talent of the roster in via the trade market on relatively great deals.

However, the team has also made a few bad signings in free agency (sorry Jodie Meeks, Boban Marjanovic, and Jon Leuer), and it has also struggled with developing its draft picks relative to each player’s potential.

Certainly, there has been more good than bad in the Van Gundy era, but there are clear areas for improvement.

So, what is one area you wish Van Gundy could have done a better job?

For me, it’s the player development–and I recognize this is a bit harder to evaluate.

Let me explain.

The roster moves and signings have been a wash. For every Marcus Morris, Avery Bradley, and Tobias Harris trade, there is a Jon Leuer, Boban Marjanovic, or Jodie Meeks signing. Or, there’s a bad trade. (see Spencer Dinwiddie to the Bulls).

While there has been a lot of good and a lot of bad, as it pertains to Van Gundy (and in fairness, Jeff Bower) with roster moves, there has pretty much only been bad for Van Gundy in developing his young players relative to their ability.

This is where it gets complicated.

An argument could be made about Spencer Dinwiddie, Andre Drummond, Stanley Johnson, and even Henry Ellenson showing year-over-year growth, but an argument could also be made that these players could be doing more in other situations, or should be doing more.

In fact, this is an argument that we can easily make in the case of Dinwiddie.

I love Van Gundy, I think he’s making his young players better, but he also has too short of a leash for my liking when it comes to them and I think it hurts the team.
