The Detroit Pistons have been a mess this season, and for much of Stan Van Gundy’s tenure for that matter. What does that mean for Van Gundy’s future in Detroit? When asked about it, team owner Tom Gores didn’t exactly give a vote of confidence.
I’m sure the Detroit Pistons are sick of losing.
That goes for Stan Van Gundy as well, in the midst of what is looking like another fruitless season that has been decimated by injury.
Regardless of circumstances, Van Gundy has only had one winning season to date as President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach for the Detroit Pistons and his in year four of a five year deal.
Considering this, many have been wondering what the future holds for Van Gundy.
When asked about Van Gundy’s future, Pistons’ owner Tom Gores didn’t close the door on the subject. His follow up comment, was even more interesting.
So Gores won’t commit on Van Gundy, but believes in Griffin and Drummond as cornerstone pieces? Or at least, did believe in the pairing.
Gores has been quick to defend Van Gundy throughout the years. The fact that he left the question on the table when directly asked about it speaks volumes what he’s thinking now.
It’s important to note that Gores did say he has confidence in Van Gundy, but he did go on to say that Van Gundy’s fate would be decided in the offseason, which sort of cancels out the confidence part.
Hard to know what will happen, but in fairness to Van Gundy, we’ve never seen the Pistons at full strength with Griffin on the team.
I wouldn’t fault Gores for parting with Van Gundy, but bringing him back for one more season to see how the team will look at full strength makes a lot of sense too.
