Sidney Lowe

Sidney Lowe began his career as a point guard for North Carolina State University (NC State) where he played all four years. He was part of the 1983 national championship team.

Lowe was drafted 25th overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1983 NBA draft, but was quickly traded to the Indiana Pacers. He bounced around throughout his career, never settling in one place for too long. He managed to play six seasons in the NBA, including six games for the Detroit Pistons in 1984-85.

After retiring from basketball he was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach in 1991. Halfway through the 1992-93 season, he took over as head coach and stayed there until the end of the 1993-94 season.

Lowe then served as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers under Mike Fratello until 1999, when he went back to Minnesota as an assistant.

In 2000-01, he became the fifth head coach in team history for the Vancouver Grizzlies. Lowe led them to a franchise-best 23-59 record, a feat he matched again the following season.

Since then, he has served as head coach for NC State from 2006-2011, and as an assistant coach for several different teams including the Timberwolves, again (on two occasions), Pistons, Utah Jazz, and the Washington Wizards. During those stints he worked under a number of head coaches including Flip Saunders, Tyrone Corbin, and Scott Brooks.

He was also the assistant that worked the closest with the Washington guards John Wall and Bradley Beal. That bodes well given the crop of young and promising guards present on the Pistons roster, such as Luke Kennard, Reggie Bullock, and the two new draftees to name a few.

Lowe has spent a total of 17 years as an assistant coach and five years as a head coach. With this hire, the Pistons gain somebody with plenty of experience in a few different roles and circumstances.
