Drummond quickly became the face of the franchise – overshadowing Greg “The Moose” Monroe – and ascended the ranks of the greats in Detroit Pistons history. Even through his struggles, most notably his free throw shooting, he has shown that he is willing to grow and learn. He shot free throws like he was competing to be the worst free-throw shooter of all time. However, he reversed that trend and went from shooting free throws at a 38.6 percent clip in 2016-17 to a 60.5 percent clip the following year.
Drummond consistently leads the league in offensive rebounding, helping the Detroit Pistons get a second, third, and sometimes fourth chance to make the basket. In reality, it shouldn’t take that many shots to score, but life isn’t always easy. This rare ability enables the team to possess an offensive edge. Reggie Jackson is comfortable lobbing the ball up to Drummond or even shooting small floaters when he knows Dre is in his prime offensive rebounding position.
He has shown at times that he has the ability to completely dominate a game on the defensive end when he is focused. During a game against the Portland Trailblazers in 2015, Detroit was down by 13 points going into the fourth quarter. However, Drummond remained focused and played one of the best defensive games of his career, making stop after stop. The Pistons came back and won by 17 points. The final score showed one thing: pure domination in the fourth quarter.
