3. Mykhailiuk gets run

Overall, the Pistons played their starters a ton of minutes, leaving just four bench players seeing time tonight. We got a much better Langston Galloway than normal with 12 points in 28 minutes. The only two big men who played off the bench, Thon Maker who scored four points in nine minutes and Christian Wood who had all zeroes on his box score stats except for a negative-10 plus/minus rating, so there’s not much to talk about there.

However, we did see the most of Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk we’ve seen as a Detroit Pistons, gracing us with 15 minutes of action. Mostly, it was not a pretty sight.

Mykhailiuk and the bench unit as a whole struggled in the second quarter. The Pistons scored 13 points in the quarter and didn’t score their first point until a Maker free throw with 8:24 left.

Mykhailiuk had a couple of ugly shots hit the side of the backboard and a miscommunication on defense with him and Kennard which led to a Caris LeVert dunk. He also nearly got his ankle broken earlier in the game by Spencer Dinwiddie and is just not good on defense.

But, Mykhailiuk was able to redeem himself in the third quarter with a nice block on LeVert and on the ensuing break Mykhailiuk hit a three for his only points for the game to put the Pistons up 83-72. For what it’s worth, I can live with Svi having a mixed kind of game as long as it’s not dragging the team down totally.

Once Rose comes back, the bench unit should operate with more confidence. I don’t expect much from Svi going forward, but not being god awful feels like a win to me.
