Step one: selling

The first step to tanking is selling off all of your best assets in order to make your roster cheaper, younger, and most importantly worse. This would result in anyone not named Sekou Doumbouya, Luke Kennard, and Christian Wood should be on the trading block. The most enticing pieces the Pistons have to offer would be Andre Drummond, Langston Galloway, Bruce Brown, and maybe even Blake Griffin, depending on the team.

There have been many articles on Griffin and Drummond being traded to different teams, but the goal remains the same, get young talent, picks, and/or expiring contracts in return for players.

Personally, my favorite trade is sending Andre to Charlotte for Nic Batum, Malik Monk, and their 2020 First Round Pick. This is a reasonable trade for me but with the incompetence coming from Michael Jordan’s ownership, the Pistons could possibly steal Devonte’ Graham, another pick, or maybe even Michigan native Miles Bridges or Rookie of the Year sleeper, PJ Washington.

My Blake Griffin trade would be a three team deal between Orlando, Detroit, and San Antonio where the Pistons receive Dejounte Murray, LaMarcus Aldridge, Patty Mills, Wesley Iwundu, and a 2021 first round pick from Orlando and San Antonio, Orlando receives DeMar DeRozan and Brown, and the Spurs receive Griffin, Thon Maker, Galloway, Mo Bamba, and Evan Fournier. This trade kick starts Detroit’s rebuild while giving the Magic a star to compliment Vucevic and gets rid of the Spurs’ ineffective two stars and lets them attempt to start another playoff streak.

Finally, the Pistons should move on from Reggie Jackson and his large $18 million expiring deal would be an excellent trade piece for those looking to shed salary and get rid of an expensive, unused player like James Johnson along with a 2025 First Round Pick.

This would leave the Pistons with a starting lineup of Dejounte Murray, Luke Kennard, Malik Monk, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Christian Wood, with four first round picks coming in over the next few years. Next comes the hardest part for both fans and the front office, losing and the draft.
