Wood’s future with the Pistons

The unfortunate reality for fans in Detroit is that Wood’s tenure in with the Pistons could be over. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent this summer and with more than one team likely interested in his services, he could very well be on his way out the door.

Detroit will have more than enough money to pay him whatever they see fit, so the odds are that he’ll stick around. After all, they’re the first organization to believe in him and give him a legitimate shot.

So in the event that they’re able to re-sign him, Wood will likely either adopt a starting position in the frontcourt, or come off of the bench as the sixth man. It’s all dependent on what the Pistons do in the draft and in free agency.

Whether or not he can be a long term option in Detroit remains to be seen. He’s shown glimpses of being a legitimate All-Star candidate, and that’s even a goal that he’s recently set for himself.

His ceiling is currently a bit tricky to navigate, as he’s still refining his game. At the very least however, Wood will serve as an important role player on a team who’s trying to achieve success.

His elevated scoring output relative to Drummond’s may put the Pistons in a better situation come playoff time, but if his rim protection regresses or even stays the same, they may still be in trouble.

Detroit found a potential diamond in the rough with Wood, and the hope is that he’s able to stick around for awhile longer.
