In a recent mock draft, the Detroit Pistons turn their current pick into several others. Is it worth it?

No matter what team you root for, there is one thing the majority of fans agree on: everyone loves the draft. When your team starts losing, and all hope is lost on your favorite team’s current season, the mock drafts start pouring in and you look to see who may be the savior of your city.

If you’re on the verge of championship contention, you’re hoping to find that one last piece of the puzzle to finish off your rotation. The Detroit Pistons, in this case, are one of the teams hoping to find a player who can help turn the franchise around.

Now that the NBA season is nearing its conclusion, the focus of many basketball fans has fully turned to the upcoming draft and who their respective teams are going to select. While the NBA has locked into November 18th as the draft date, per Adrian Wojnarowski, that is still two months away and more mock drafts will be on the way.

In his most recent mock draft , Jonathan Wasserman at Bleacher Report shook up the draft by showing how three trades can change the total outcome of the NBA draft.

The first trade is quite an obvious one that everyone is expecting to happen. The New York Knicks, desperate to change course, trade-up and take LaMelo Ball while the Golden State Warriors fall back to the eighth pick.

The second trade has the Atlanta Hawks acquiring Buddy Hield and the 12th pick while sending Kevin Huerter and the sixth pick to the Sacramento Kings.

But here is where it gets interesting: The Detroit Pistons trade the seventh overall pick in exchange for the 14th, 26th, and 30th overall picks.

His logic for the move seems to make sense to me. Wasserman thinks Detroit “might not feel confident in putting their eggs in one basket at No. 7. They may believe they can draft a similar prospect at No. 14 and have two more chances to find steals at No. 26 and No. 30.”

In this mock draft, the Celtics end up with Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton, someone who Pistons fan may rather want on their team, the Pistons get the chance to build their roster up.

However, the Pistons ended up taking UNC G Cole Anthony, Arizona C Zeke Nnaji, and TCU G Desomnd Bane. While these may not be the players Pistons fans were hoping to see in the Motor city whenever next season begins, is it actually worth it for the Pistons to trade their one pick for three first-rounders?

In my opinion, yes.

First things first, the Pistons future roster is currently headed in no specific direction, especially since there is only one player signed past the 2022-23 season. And that is current rookie Sekou Doumbouya.

Will the Pistons actually pay pending free-agent Christian Wood? Will Luke Kennard, the longest tenured Piston right now, be around much longer? What about role players such as Bruce Brown and Svi Mykhailiuk?

Odds are a few of them will still be around, but nothing is set in stone at this point. Trying to grab a few possible future role players may be the right move in a draft where they will be missing out on the top prospects who will be off the board regardless.

If the Pistons do indeed make this trade, they could also use their new assets to trade back up. Imagine the Pistons pulling off a Sonny Weaver Jr.

in Draft Day type move (hopefully you get the reference). If they were to be able to pair the 14th pick with someone like Derrick Rose to move back into ninth through 11th pick, the Pistons would be picking in the same range they would have been all along, but instead they have two additional picks in the draft.

This is not the last mock draft we are going to see while counting down the days to the NBA Draft, but it gives us something to think about. With the Pistons future so foggy at the moment, what is the right move for the Pistons to make in this year’s draft? Only time will tell, but a three-for-one swap may point us in the right direction.
