Detroit Pistons: The future is bright

The Detroit Pistons got big contributions from all three of their first-round picks from last year’s draft and if that draft were done again, all three might go higher.

Killian Hayes- 13

Hayes missed most of the season due to injury and given the way he played in his first seven games, fans didn’t expect much when he returned. But Hayes played well after coming back, was much more comfortable controlling the offense, and flashed what he can already do very well, which is defend and pass.

Hayes has had 13 straight games with at least 5+ assists, which puts him in some elite company of point guards this season. He passed Joe Dumars and is now second All-Time for Pistons’ rookies behind Isiah Thomas. Not bad.

Isaiah Stewart- 33.3 percent

There are a lot of things about Isaiah Stewart’s season that were surprising. He is leading all rookies in blocked shots, rebounds and field goal percentage. He is 13th in the NBA in blocked shots overall and looks like a guy who could lead the league someday. But the most surprising stats has to be that he shot 33 percent from the 3-point line. This is mostly surprising because no one though Beef Stew would even attempt one, much less make any. But he showed that he is willing and able to take that shot, which raises the ceiling of what he can be as a player.

Saddiq Bey- 171 (and counting)

I don’t think that anyone is surprised that Saddiq Bey can shoot the 3-ball, as he was viewed as an NBA ready 3-and-D prospect out of Villanova. But if you had asked people if Bey would make more 3-point shots as a rookie than Stephen Curry did? Most would have taken that bet. But that’s exactly what Bey did. In fact, he was on pace to break the All-Time rookie record for made 3-point shots if the season had not been shortened.

Bey has proven himself to be a durable, reliable defender and shooter, who looks like he has even more in the bag. He was THE steal from the 2020 NBA Draft and a guy a lot of teams wish they hadn’t passed up.
