Detroit Pistons Draft: Evaluating the All-Atlantic 10 team
Jalen Crutcher, Guard, Dayton
Jalen Crutcher is not one of the best Jalens in the draft (that’ Suggs, Green) but he is still a very good player who has declared for the 2021 draft. At only 6-1, his size is a negative on the defensive end, but he doesn’t let it stop him on offense.
Crutcher scored 17 points per game last year, dished out nearly five assists, and grabbed a surprisingly high 3.5 rebounds. He is a confident three-point shooter who has earned the green light to chuck up over five a game. He would be a good addition to a team that needs three-point shooting, like the Pistons..
The downsides are his poor defense and the undisciplined way he plays offense. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’ll improve much on the defensive end, but if Detroit played him with four good defenders, you might be able to hide.
Discipline often comes with age, so after a few seasons, he should be better.
The verdict is similar to Jordan Goodwin’s. Don’t use a high second-round pick on him, and, if he ends up in Detroit, be aware of what you got: a good scorer and offensive weapon who won’t do well on the defensive end, and probably never will.
Kellen Grady, Guard, Davidson (Kentucky)
After his fourth season in 2021, Kellen Grady announced he would transfer to the University of Kentucky. So he will not be in the 2021 Draft Class.
After his performance in Dayton, and with the opportunity to play for a blue-blood program in Kentucky, next year Grady should be a first-round pick. His last year at Davidson was very impressive.
He scored 17 points a game and shot wildly efficient from both inside and outside the arc. The only downside is his athleticism-or more to the point – a lack of it.
As a ball-dominant player, he doesn’t process the elite first step needed, so his ball-handling is subpar. He is also not a defensive stud, but he isn’t a total liability either.
Keeping in mind he won’t be available this year and will get to play under a season under John Calipari, he has a real shot at an NBA career, in the future.
