Detroit Pistons: Kelly Olynyk is always moving

When you can’t beat defenders off the dribble with speed or use athleticism to push through or jump over them, you have to find other ways to get open.

Olynyk is great in the pick-and-roll, as well as moving without the ball, which is an underrated skill in the NBA and one Luka Garza can learn by watching the veteran.

This is especially true when you have two guards in Killian Hayes and Cade Cunningham who are plus passers and will draw a lot of attention from defenses.

Here you see one of Olynyk’s favorite plays, the pick-and-pop. He waits for the defense to react to the ball handler after the screen and then moves into space to get the open look:

This is something we are going to see a lot of this season with Cunningham and Hayes, as both can get into the lane, draw the attention of defenders and allow Olynyk to move into space.

This is something that Luka Garza can replicate, as he is also a smart player who sets quality screens. He’ll be doing a lot more “popping” than “rolling” in the PnR and can learn from one of the best bigs in the game at doing it.
